Belmont Shore Residents Association MINUTES EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING August 13, 2009 The meeting was called to order by President Mike Ruehle at 6:00 pm. The members of the Executive Board present were: Aileen Colon, John Forstrom, Marvin Jones, Jim Lazarus, Secretary Jeff Miller, and President Mike Ruehle. Executive Board members Tim Clark, Vice President Terence Endersen, Larry Jordan, Charles Folks, and Treasurer Christopher Van Horn were absent. Twenty-three additional BSRA members and visitors were present. Catrina Hanna, Youth Services Librarian at the Bay Shore Library, discussed the library's funding problems and budget concerns, including the reduced staffing. She explained their "wish list" on amazon.com, which is a means for patrons to support the library through direct donations of book purchases. Secretary Jeff Miller reported these items of correspondence during the last month: updating of corporate records with the California Secretary of State, contracting with Long Beach Unified School District for the use of the Rogers Middle School auditorium for the September meeting, and mailing of the September meeting notices to members, which cost $131.86. More than fifty renewals have been received already. An email request was received from Rich Carry: he is asking for the member names, addresses, and email addresses. Discussion included the observation that member information has always been considered confidential and for use only for official Association business. The Bylaws do provide for inspection of financial records by members. A motion was approved unanimously to deny Mr. Carry's request. A suggestion was made, regarding the annual notice of dues to members, that a space be provided on the form for contributions, and that a new membership category of "lifetime member" be created. Secretary Jeff Miller reported the checking account balance of $4,131.51. LBPD Lt. Rosenthal addressed the question of an assault near Chase Bank Sunday night at 7:30 pm. He said he had no information about such an incident, but Joel Colbert said the victim told him about the incident, and said the victim received treatment at a hospital. It is not known if the victim reported the incident to the police. Colbert agreed to send any additional information he had to the police. Lt. Rosenthal reported increased numbers of automobile burglaries and reminded residents not to leave valuables visible in vehicles. A task force addressing this issue has resulted in more than thirty felony arrests and many misdemeanor arrests as well. There was considerable discussion about the recent beating of Todd, a homeless person, who was found on the beach at Granada Ave. Todd is reportedly in the hospital in critical condition. Kate Karp and Anna Todda announced a vigil to be held for Todd on Thursday, August 20 at 7 pm. There was no representative present from Councilmember DeLong's office to give a report. There was no representative present from the Parking Commission to give a report. Nancy Buchanan, BSBA representative, announced the schedule of several future BSBA events: the Stroll and Savor on August 19 and 20; the Summer Sale on August 21, 22, and 23; the Car Show on September 13; and the Christmas Parade on December 5. President Mike Ruehle discussed the vacancy for the one resident representative on the Parking Commission and recommended Terry Endersen. Joel Colbert said he had applied for the position. A motion was approved unanimously to recommend Terry Endersen for the position to Mayor Foster, who appoints the commissioners. Secretary Jeff Miller announced the nominees who have announced their candidacy for the Executive Board at the September election. Aileen Colon Several of the nominees spoke about their candidacy. President Mike Ruehle stated there is no additional information about Kurt Schneiter's attempt to obtain city approval to begin a valet parking operation in the F&M Bank parking lot across the street from Bono's. President Mike Ruehle described his attempts to obtain information from the city about the construction work at Acapulco Inn, which does not conform with the specification of their building permit. City staff and Councilman DeLong have been unresponsive to requests for information. John Forstrum described his frustration with Belmont Station and a similar lack of response from the city for his requests for information. The bar is creating a nuisance with excessive noise and has expanded their bar without a permit. During the opportunity for public comment Jennifer Grey complained about the problems with rowdiness on July 4 and following. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 pm.
